Access

I left my motorcycle near the suspended bridge close to the Barangay Buot barangay hall, where I did not pay a parking fee. From there, I crossed the bridge and started the ascent toward Samboryo. Public transport in the area is limited, although habal-habal and private vehicle access are available.

Route Description

From the bridge, I climbed toward Samboryo for approximately 2.41 km. Early in the hike, the trail widened enough to resemble an unpaved road, but that section ended abruptly and narrowed again into a rocky ascending path.

The climb continued to a junction where one trail descended toward Cabatbatan and the other continued onto the Babag Ridge Trail. This ridge section covered approximately 2.72 km, beginning around km 2.16 and ending near km 4.88 of the hike.

I passed small clusters of communities during the earlier part of the route but did not see extensive farming there. A few goats and cows were beside or near the trail. I also noticed relatively few dogs until I reached Barangay Guila-Guila near the end of the hike, where I began seeing larger groups.

Some of the first sections of the Babag Ridge Trail had good tree cover extending for several meters. Most of the ridge, however, remained relatively open, with little tree cover and cogon grass across much of the surrounding ground.

The path itself was generally well-trodden and easy to follow. Despite the mountain setting, I saw little vegetation growing across the trail, and the route appeared to receive regular use from local residents and livestock.

Trail Conditions

The trail was dry during this hike, with cloudy to sunny conditions in the morning. I spent roughly 81% of the route on trail and 19% on road. Insect activity was low, and most of the people I saw were local residents.

Stores were available near the communities along the route. I also saw small spring catchments, particularly around Guila-Guila, where hoses had been connected to spring sources so water could flow downhill toward homes by gravity.

Notes

Pig raising was especially noticeable along this route. Compared with other hiking routes I have visited, I passed more households or areas where pigs were being raised.

About 45% of the route was trail and 55% unpaved or concrete road, with moderate shade and many stores near the communities. I did this hike in August 2026 on a cloudy-sunny morning, and the trail was dry, with very few insects and almost no human traffic once I reached the high mountain sections.

I parked my motorcycle near the suspended bridge by the Barangay Buot-Taup Hall. There was no parking fee, and the road to the area was concrete. Public transportation was limited, while habal-habal and private vehicle access were available.

Because the loop exits back at the bridge, I first had to hike about 3.4 kilometers toward Guila-Guila. From there, I passed through a small hillside community and relied on directions from friendly locals to find the way.

Route Description

The ascent began immediately after the Guila-Guila hillside community and continued steadily toward Babag Ridge. Some sections were already being reclaimed by thick vegetation despite the recent Pamutan Trailfest 2026, and I noted that these portions could become difficult to follow within a few months.

Near the approach to Babag Ridge, farming activity kept the pathways clearer and more maintained. I then continued descending through the mountain sections toward Dam-an and Cabatbatan before ascending again toward Samboryo.

Along the way, I passed hillside farms and roadside plantings of cassava, corn, eggplant, and banana. Several concrete spring catchments had also been built across the agricultural areas for irrigation.

Two large cows blocked the pathway at one point, so I had to negotiate my way around them. I also passed two sections with heavy tree canopies that gave solid shade: one after Babag Ridge toward Dam-an and another near Samboryo on the way back toward Buot-Taup.

Trail Conditions

The trail was dry during my hike. Shade coverage was moderate overall, with the two heavily canopied sections providing more substantial cover. I encountered only a few insects throughout the route.

Stores were common near the communities, while the higher mountain sections had very few structures. Most houses were concentrated along the main roads on the lower hillsides.

Notes

I encountered dense groups of dogs near residential areas, but the open mountain sections were completely clear of animals. Human traffic was also limited: I met locals during the initial ascent in Guila-Guila and around the road crossings toward Dam-an, Cabatbatan, and Samboryo, but saw no other people on the high mountain trail.

Several stretches had moderate to high cliff exposure, although thick foliage largely hid the drop-offs. The route also had two large cows occupying the trail during my passage.

The descent toward Samboryo also showed how the route changes when approached from the opposite direction. From Buot-Taup toward Samboryo, the same section would involve a sustained climb on a narrow, rocky track.

The hike was characterized by a long, steep initial descent over fine scree and sharp rock, followed by road walking through active construction areas and local settlements. A morning haze hung across the valley during this sunny hike, which I completed in August 2026.

Access

I started at the foot of Pangilatan Peak, where motorcycle parking was available without a fee. The jump-off point was accessible by concrete road and could be reached by private vehicle. Public transportation to the area was limited, though habal-habal services were available.

Route Description

Since the jump-off point sits on top of the mountain, I began with a continuous 1.22 km descent toward the lowlands. The footpath was covered with loose scree and razor-sharp rock surfaces, requiring careful footing on the way down.

At the bottom of the hill, the trail intersected the active Metro Cebu Expressway project, where I walked through dirt, dust, and mud near large construction machinery. After passing the construction corridor, the route turned uphill along the road, leading through several residential communities before returning to Pangilatan Peak to complete the loop.

Trail Conditions

The weather remained sunny throughout the morning, and trail surfaces stayed completely dry. Tree cover was limited, leaving most of the route exposed to the sun. Small local stores were open near the communities along the back half of the loop, though carrying at least 2 liters of water was necessary.

I ran into high insect activity along the footpaths, and the crowd consisted mostly of locals, along with a few joggers and hikers near Pangilatan Peak. Approximately 60% of the route followed dirt and rock trails, while the remaining 40% consisted of roads.

Additional Notes

Dogs were present in large numbers along the trails and near the settlements, making a trekking pole especially helpful both for stability on the loose rock and for keeping animals at a distance. Although the sweeping valley landscape remained broad and open, morning haze kept the view from looking as crisp as on my previous visit.

Early morning hikers and joggers mostly used the concrete road leading to the peak, while others continued onto the mountain path to finish their hike.

The hike featured rolling terrain with frequent short climbs and descents instead of one sustained ascent, creating a steady workout. Although much of the route passed near communities, a few quieter sections required extra attention where the trail became faint. I completed this hike in July 2026.

I began by following community roads and trails toward Mt. Naupa, where the route alternated between open countryside and well-used footpaths. Naupa summit, I also encountered a few other hikers.

After leaving the Mt. Naupa area, I reached sections where cultivated farmland had replaced parts of the original trail, making it take a little longer to locate the next segment. The descent toward Balirong also included a faint section of trail that appeared to receive less foot traffic. Near the Balirong exit, I crossed a small stream before continuing toward Cogon. The final part of the hike followed Cogon Road, where a steady uphill climb led back to Cogon Chapel and completed the loop.

Trail Conditions

The weather remained cloudy throughout my hike. Much of the route was exposed with limited shade, while the trail stayed dry during my visit. Stores were available whenever I passed through communities, and mobile signal remained strong for most of the hike with only a few dead spots.

I mostly encountered local residents, along with a few hikers near Mt. Naupa, and insect activity was noticeably high. Approximately 30% of the route followed trails, while the remaining 70% used roads.

Additional Notes

The rolling terrain provided a steady rhythm of climbs and descents without any prolonged ascent or descent. During my visit, several narrow road improvement projects appeared unfinished, although I did not see any active construction work.

It was also mango season, and many plantations had fallen fruit scattered beneath the trees. Some roadside sections passed pig-raising areas where livestock odors were noticeable. I also saw cows along the route, although none blocked the trail. Throughout the hike, I had several friendly conversations with local residents, who were welcoming and helpful.

The route featured rolling climbs and descents instead of one sustained ascent, while the mostly open terrain provided views toward Naga, Minglanilla, and Talisay. Although navigation remained straightforward for most of the hike, the moderate distance and repeated elevation changes made it more physically demanding than a typical beginner trail. I completed this hike in July 2026.

The weather remained sunny throughout my hike. Most of the route was exposed with limited shade, and the trail stayed dry during my visit. Mobile signal remained available from start to finish, while stores were present along the route near the communities. I mostly encountered local residents rather than other hikers, and insect activity was noticeably higher during this hike.

Additional Notes

Houses and small settlements appeared along much of the route, so I rarely felt far from the community. Farming activity was limited during my visit, although the landscape was clearly agricultural. Some sections had moderate cliff exposure, but vegetation reduced the feeling of exposure while walking.

A hiking stick can also be useful when passing the territorial dogs commonly found along the trail.

Campagao Community Trail is a point-to-point community trail in Manduang, Minglanilla. The documented route passes through rolling hills, farms, and scattered hillside homes, providing early views of Naga, Minglanilla, and Talisay before continuing through a quiet rural landscape where signs of everyday life remain close to the trail.

The hike took place on a cloudy morning. The trail was dry during the documented hike but may become slightly muddy and slippery after rain. Mobile signal was present throughout the hike, although it was intermittent in some sections.

Shade was limited because of the lack of large trees. No stores were observed along the route. Locals were encountered during the hike, and only a few insects were observed.

The trail was well-trodden and easy to follow. Some narrow sections had moderate cliff exposure that was partially concealed by thick vegetation.

Additional Notes

This is a community trail and did not feel isolated. A few cows and dogs were encountered along the route.

Several motorcycles were observed parked near one of the houses in the community before Campagao Peak. However, the access route used by the motorcycles could not be determined. The documented route includes a long, steep staircase leading to the community, which would be difficult for motorcycles to ascend if approached in reverse. This suggests there may be another access route to the community.

The hike began with a gradual uphill walk before transitioning into a longer downhill return. Navigation remained straightforward throughout, and I completed this hike in May 2026.

The weather remained sunny throughout my hike. Much of the route was exposed with limited shade, although I found several stores whenever I passed through local communities. The trail stayed dry during my visit but could become very muddy after rainfall. Mobile signal was strong near the start before becoming intermittent in some areas. Additional Notes

This route passed through established communities rather than remote mountain terrain, and the locals I met, especially the children, were friendly and helpful. Hiking the loop in the opposite direction would turn the section from the road junction toward Cabanbanan into a long, continuous climb.

A hiking stick or trekking pole can also be useful for anyone who is uncomfortable walking past the many dogs found along the route.

The route remained easy to follow throughout, although the repeated elevation changes gradually added to the effort as the hike progressed.

Later in the hike, longer downhill sections marked much of the return. Even though none of the individual climbs were particularly steep, the combination of distance and continuous rolling terrain made the final kilometers feel more demanding.

The weather stayed sunny throughout my hike. Most of the trail was exposed with very little shade, while the ground remained dry during my visit. The trail could become muddy after rain. I started near Danasan Elementary School, where motorcycle parking was available along the roadside without a parking fee. The roads leading to the jump-off included a mix of concrete, paved, and dirt sections. Private vehicles could reach the area, while public transportation was very limited.

Habal-habal services were available, and local fares from Danao City proper to Danasan Elementary School typically ranged from ₱300 to ₱500 per person, with lower fares possible when sharing a ride. The waterfall is about 28 km from Danao City proper, and the trip usually takes around 45 to 60 minutes by motorcycle or private vehicle.

Route Description

I chose the longer loop instead of the shorter direct route to the falls. The trail was easy to follow, and I regularly crossed paths with other hikers throughout the day. After reaching Cantaling Falls, I began the return climb using the same uphill section shared by both routes.

The trail included sustained ascents and descents, along with several rocky and uneven sections underfoot. I also crossed a number of manageable river crossings before continuing back toward the trailhead. The final climb was the most demanding part of the hike and continued steadily until I returned to the starting point.

Trail Conditions

The weather was sunny throughout the morning. I walked through a mix of shaded and exposed sections, while the trail remained dry during my visit. I found stores only near the communities at the beginning of the hike. Mobile signal started out strong but disappeared farther along the route, and insects were minimal. Because this is a popular waterfall trail, I encountered many other hikers during the day.

Additional Notes

When I arrived at the jump-off, several local guides, mostly children and teenagers, approached me and offered guiding services to Cantaling Falls. Their fees were negotiable. The shorter direct route to the waterfall covers about 2 km and is mostly downhill, but it requires a river crossing that can become difficult or inaccessible after heavy rain. I also noticed that some maps and GPX sources identify the waterfall as Danasan Falls, while recent local usage and hiking content commonly refer to it as Cantaling Falls.
