I followed a shorter reverse variation of my earlier Buot–Guila-Guila–Cabatbatan–Samboryo Trail Loop, including about 2.72 km of previously unvisited trail that I refer to here as the Phase 1 Babag Ridge Trail.

Much of the ridge was open and covered in cogon grass, while several sections closer to the communities passed under better tree cover. I did this hike in September 2026.

I left my motorcycle near the suspended bridge close to the Barangay Buot barangay hall, where I did not pay a parking fee. From there, I crossed the bridge and started the ascent toward Samboryo. Public transport in the area is limited, although habal-habal and private vehicle access are available.

Why this trail is rated Mild

✓ Mostly clear trail with occasional navigation awareness required
✓ Moderate hiking distance
✓ Sustained but manageable climbs or descents
✓ Some isolated sections between communities
✓ Limited turnaround or exit options

On this trail: ridge

Route Description

From the bridge, I climbed toward Samboryo for approximately 2.41 km. Early in the hike, the trail widened enough to resemble an unpaved road, but that section ended abruptly and narrowed again into a rocky ascending path.

The climb continued to a junction where one trail descended toward Cabatbatan and the other continued onto the Babag Ridge Trail. This ridge section covered approximately 2.72 km, beginning around km 2.16 and ending near km 4.88 of the hike.

I passed small clusters of communities during the earlier part of the route but did not see extensive farming there. A few goats and cows were beside or near the trail. I also noticed relatively few dogs until I reached Barangay Guila-Guila near the end of the hike, where I began seeing larger groups.

Some of the first sections of the Babag Ridge Trail had good tree cover extending for several meters. Most of the ridge, however, remained relatively open, with little tree cover and cogon grass across much of the surrounding ground.

The path itself was generally well-trodden and easy to follow. Despite the mountain setting, I saw little vegetation growing across the trail, and the route appeared to receive regular use from local residents and livestock.

Trail Conditions

The trail was dry during this hike, with cloudy to sunny conditions in the morning. I spent roughly 81% of the route on trail and 19% on road. Insect activity was low, and most of the people I saw were local residents.

Stores were available near the communities along the route. I also saw small spring catchments, particularly around Guila-Guila, where hoses had been connected to spring sources so water could flow downhill toward homes by gravity.

Notes

Pig raising was especially noticeable along this route. Compared with other hiking routes I have visited, I passed more households or areas where pigs were being raised.

I started near the suspended community bridge by the Barangay Buot-Taup Hall and initially followed the road toward Guila-Guila before climbing toward Babag Ridge and continuing through the mountain sections.

About 45% of the route was trail and 55% unpaved or concrete road, with moderate shade and many stores near the communities. I did this hike in August 2026 on a cloudy-sunny morning, and the trail was dry, with very few insects and almost no human traffic once I reached the high mountain sections.

Access

I parked my motorcycle near the suspended bridge by the Barangay Buot-Taup Hall. There was no parking fee, and the road to the area was concrete. Public transportation was limited, while habal-habal and private vehicle access were available.

Because the loop exits back at the bridge, I first had to hike about 3.4 kilometers toward Guila-Guila. From there, I passed through a small hillside community and relied on directions from friendly locals to find the way.

Why this trail is rated Mild

✓ Mostly clear trail with occasional navigation awareness required
✓ Moderate hiking distance
✓ Sustained but manageable climbs or descents
✓ Some isolated sections between communities
✓ Limited turnaround or exit options

On this trail: bridge • cliff • farmland • forest • ridge • roads

Route Description

The ascent began immediately after the Guila-Guila hillside community and continued steadily toward Babag Ridge. Some sections were already being reclaimed by thick vegetation despite the recent Pamutan Trailfest 2026, and I noted that these portions could become difficult to follow within a few months.

Near the approach to Babag Ridge, farming activity kept the pathways clearer and more maintained. I then continued descending through the mountain sections toward Dam-an and Cabatbatan before ascending again toward Samboryo.

Along the way, I passed hillside farms and roadside plantings of cassava, corn, eggplant, and banana. Several concrete spring catchments had also been built across the agricultural areas for irrigation.

Two large cows blocked the pathway at one point, so I had to negotiate my way around them. I also passed two sections with heavy tree canopies that gave solid shade: one after Babag Ridge toward Dam-an and another near Samboryo on the way back toward Buot-Taup.

Trail Conditions

The trail was dry during my hike. Shade coverage was moderate overall, with the two heavily canopied sections providing more substantial cover. I encountered only a few insects throughout the route.

Stores were common near the communities, while the higher mountain sections had very few structures. Most houses were concentrated along the main roads on the lower hillsides.

Notes

I encountered dense groups of dogs near residential areas, but the open mountain sections were completely clear of animals. Human traffic was also limited: I met locals during the initial ascent in Guila-Guila and around the road crossings toward Dam-an, Cabatbatan, and Samboryo, but saw no other people on the high mountain trail.

Several stretches had moderate to high cliff exposure, although thick foliage largely hid the drop-offs. The route also had two large cows occupying the trail during my passage.

The descent toward Samboryo also showed how the route changes when approached from the opposite direction. From Buot-Taup toward Samboryo, the same section would involve a sustained climb on a narrow, rocky track.

Incomplete/ Buhisan Mini Forest Loop https://beesayatv.com/trails/incomplete-buhisan-mini-forest-loop/ Mon, 20 Jul 2026 12:19:15 +0000 https://beesayatv.com/?post_type=trail&p=929 This route is still being explored. The Trail Atlas currently shows only the section that I was able to verify during my most recent field visit.

The exploration took place in June 2026 with the goal of verifying a downloaded GPX route that appeared to form a loop through the Buhisan forest near the Buhisan Reservoir. I was able to follow the trail deep into the forest before deciding to turn back.

The first part of the route was well-trodden and appeared to be used regularly by both hikers and local residents. During the hike, one local resident mentioned that the loop eventually passed through a densely vegetated section, which I later reached. The trail crossed a small river where the continuation remained visible on the opposite bank. Farther ahead, however, erosion made it difficult to locate the trail, and I could no longer confidently identify where it continued. I ended the exploration at that point and retraced my steps.

Based on what I saw, the route may be easier to verify by approaching it from the opposite direction during a future field visit.

The forested section contained several spring water collection points with multiple water pipes, suggesting that local residents still access the area. I also encountered several thorny plants, and in many places the trail had become faint and difficult to distinguish. Some sections showed heavy erosion that may have resulted from strong water flow.

A future visit will require additional time. The dense vegetation and heavy tree cover make the footpaths difficult to follow, while also limiting how much can be confirmed using satellite imagery alone.

I started near Toong Barangay Hall, where motorcycle parking was available along the roadside without a parking fee. The jump-off was accessible by concrete road, and private vehicles could reach the area. Public transportation was limited, although habal-habal services were available.

Why this trail is rated Mild

✓ Easy-to-follow trail
✓ No technical climbing required
✓ Moderate physical effort required
✓ Sustained moderate ascent or descent
✓ Long exposed sections with little shade

On this trail: sunrise view • sunset view • valley

Route Description

I began the hike with a gradual climb through farmland before continuing toward Lumadnong Pool and Dulhogan. The trail alternated between open sections and more shaded areas while remaining easy to follow. As the route continued, I passed through the Buhisan Tree Tunnel before beginning the longer descent back toward the starting point.

The downhill return made up much of the second half of the loop. Although the trail never became technical and avoided sustained steep climbs, the more exposed sections made the sunny conditions more noticeable.

Trail Conditions

The weather remained sunny throughout my hike. The route alternated between shaded and exposed sections, while the trail stayed dry during my visit. Mobile signal started out strong before weakening farther along the route. I did not find any stores during the hike, encountered very few other people, and noticed only a small number of insects.

Additional Notes

Some parts of the trail felt more isolated than others, although scattered houses appeared along the route. Aside from those quieter sections, I found the loop straightforward to follow from start to finish.

✓ Short hiking distance

On this trail: farmland • river crossing • valley

Route Description

I began with a gradual climb through farmland and open countryside before continuing across rolling sections toward Mahayahay and Buhisan. The trail remained straightforward to follow as it crossed mostly open terrain. Around 2.3 km into the hike, I passed a small mountain community after completing one of the steeper uphill sections.

From there, the route gradually transitioned into a longer descent leading toward Kawa Kawa Falls. I reached the falls at approximately the 5 km mark, where this GPX recording ended. The return hike was not included in the recording, although part of the way back followed a long uphill concrete road.

Trail Conditions

The weather stayed sunny throughout my hike. Much of the route was slightly exposed with limited shade. The trail remained dry during my visit, although it could become muddy during rainy weather. Mobile signal was strong near the trailhead before becoming weak or disappearing farther along the route. I did not find any stores during the hike, encountered only a small number of other people, and noticed few insects.

Additional Notes

This report documents only the hike from Toong to Kawa Kawa Falls. The return journey was completed separately and was not included in the recorded GPX track.

Bitlang Trail Loop | Sudlon 1, Cebu City | 2026 GPX https://beesayatv.com/trails/bitlang-trail-loop/ Thu, 25 Jun 2026 10:03:27 +0000 https://beesayatv.com/?post_type=trail&p=205 The Bitlang Trail is a documented 5.3 km point-to-point hike that starts in Sitio Tabla, Sudlon 1, Cebu City, and descends to Bonbon. I followed the descending section of the trail through farms, small mountain communities, and river sections before reaching the valley.

The terrain remained easy to follow throughout the hike, although some sections were uneven and rocky. This report covers only the downhill portion of the route, while the sustained climb back to Sitio Tabla forms part of a separate full-loop hike. I completed this hike in June 2026.

Access

I started near the covered court in Sitio Tabla, where motorcycle parking was available along the roadside without a parking fee. The jump-off was accessible by concrete road, and private vehicles could reach the area. V-hires operated along the Transcentral Highway route, while habal-habal services were also available.

Why this trail is rated Tough

✓ Long hiking distance requiring sustained endurance
✓ Long or sustained climbs and descents
✓ Prolonged physical effort over several hours
✓ High route commitment with limited bailout options
✓ Assistance or evacuation may take considerable time

On this trail: farmland • forest • ridge • valley • viewpoint

Route Description

I began the hike by descending through narrow trails that gradually led toward the valley. The route passed farms, small settlements, and several river sections before reaching Bonbon. Navigation remained straightforward, although some stretches became uneven and rocky underfoot.

This report ends at the river near Bonbon. The return climb from Buot-Taup back to Sitio Tabla was not part of this hike and is covered separately. That ascent completes the full 13 km loop and consists of a sustained uphill climb lasting about 4 km.

Trail Conditions

Clouds covered the area throughout my hike. Rain the night before left the trail slightly muddy, although walking conditions remained manageable. Most of the route was exposed with limited tree cover, while stores were available whenever I passed through communities. Mobile signal started out strong before disappearing later in the hike. I did not encounter any other hikers, and mosquitoes were present in areas with denser vegetation.

Additional Notes

Although this section of the Bitlang Trail is relatively easy, completing the full loop requires enough water for the long return climb. I carried 3 liters, and I found stores between the Bitlang exit and the start of the uphill section. A trekking pole or walking stick can help with balance on the uneven terrain and reduce strain on the knees.

On sunny days, an umbrella is also useful because much of the trail has little shade. The entire route has no dangerous cliffs or exposed ridges.
