Recent reports of vandalism along Cebu’s Spartan Trail have sparked growing concern among local hikers, trail runners, and conservation groups after photos surfaced showing writings and graffiti on trees, fallen logs, and concrete structures.
Because the route passes through a sensitive upland watershed landscape, the damage has renewed discussions on how to balance increasing trail popularity—driven largely by social media exposure—with effective protection and management.
While members of the outdoors community have raised the idea of temporary trail closures for rehabilitation, no official order from local authorities has been confirmed.
In response, visitors are being urged to strictly adhere to Leave No Trace principles by remaining on established paths, packing out garbage, and leaving all natural features untouched to prevent long-term environmental degradation.
